Peruvian author. After gaining attention with his collection of short stories, The Bosses (1959), he won the Critics' Award, the Breve Book Award, and the Rómulo Gallegos Award for two full-length novels, The City and the Dog (1962) and The Green House (1966), and quickly became a star of Latin American novels. In addition to works such as Conversation at the Cathedral (1969), Pantaleón and the Women (1973), Aunt Julia and the Dramatist (1977), and The Battle at the End of the World (1981), he also wrote critical essays such as History of the Murder of a God (1971) and Eternal Feast (1975), and plays such as The Girl from Tacna (1981) and Cathy and the Hippopotamus.

ペルーの作家。短編集《ボスたち》(1959)で注目されたあと，《都会と犬っころ》(1962)と《緑の家》(1966)の二つの全体小説によって批評家賞，ブレーベ図書賞，ロムロ･ガリェゴス賞などを受賞，一躍ラテン･アメリカ小説の花形となった。《ラ･カテドラルでの対話》(1969)，《パンタレオンと女たち》(1973)，《フリア伯母さんとドラマ作家》(1977)，《世界の終りの戦い》(1981)などの作品のほかに，《神殺しの歴史》(1971)，《永遠の祝祭》(1975)のような評論と，《タクナの娘》(1981)や《キャシーと河馬》のような戯曲もある。
