[History of ritual research]
The research on ritual that connects the period before the end of the 19th century to the present is the work of William Robertson-Smith. As a theologian, he considered ritual in religion to be as important as doctrine, and argued that ritual as a joint act of believers, especially acts of sacrifice and eating together, have a religious meaning between God and believers, as well as a beneficial effect on the community and ties among the group of believers.
