In the early 1970s, Nippon Steel engineers developed a rolling piercing method, in which a square billet is forced into a two-stage caliber rolling mill and pierced with a piercer, making use of an idea from the Italian maker Calmes that a cylindrical punch is pressed into a square billet inscribed in a circular mold, a hole is pierced in the center, and the excess material blends with the surrounding dies to create a blank tube.
