A village in Yatsushiro County in the south-central part of Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 6,502 (1995). It borders Yatsushiro City to the west. The mountains of the Kyushu Mountains are widely distributed, and the Kuma River flows north through the center. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and in addition to rice and wheat, the town produces tea, mandarin oranges, shiitake mushrooms, and other crops, with tea cultivation growing significantly in recent years. The Hisatsu Line and National Route 219 run along the Kuma River, and the Kyushu Longitudinal Expressway runs through the eastern part of the town. Many people commute to Yatsushiro City. The prefectural Arase Dam is located on the Kuma River, and Kyushu Electric Power's Ohira Power Station (maximum output 500,000 kW) is located on the tributary, the Yuya River. 熊本県中南部,八代郡の村。人口6502(1995)。西は八代市に接する。九州山地の山々が広く分布し,中央を球磨川が北流する。主産業は農林業で,米,麦のほか茶,ミカン,シイタケなどを産し,近年は茶の栽培の伸びが著しい。球磨川沿いに肥薩線,国道219号線が走り,町の東部を九州縦貫自動車道が通る。八代市への通勤者も多い。球磨川には県営荒瀬ダム,支流油谷川には九州電力大平発電所(最大出力50万kW)がある。
