A commentator of the Southern Theravada Mahavihara sect who appeared in the second half of the 5th century, he was the second most important figure after Button. His birth and death years are unknown. He trained in Nāgapaṭṭana (near Tanjore) in the territory of the Pallava dynasty on the southeast coast of South India, where he wrote commentaries on early Buddhist scriptures such as the Choro-ge and Choro-nī-ge, and also left extensive annotations on Button's main work, the Treatise on the Path of Purification. He is a different person from Dharmapāla of the Mahāyāna Yogacara school. [Tanaka Kyosho]

5世紀後半にあらわれた南方上座部マハービハーラ派の注釈家で，仏音（ぶつとん）に次いで重要な人物。生没年不詳。南インドの東南海岸地方にあるパッラバ朝領内のナーガパッタナNāgapaṭṭana(タンジョール近郊)で修行し，そこで《長老偈》《長老尼偈》など初期仏教経典の注釈を書き，さらに仏音の主著《清浄道論》の複注を残した。大乗唯識学派の護法(ダルマパーラ)とは別人である。【田中教照】
