Sagami Province (Sagami Province) - Sagami no Kuni

Japanese: 相模国(相摸国) - さがみのくに

Former name of province. Sagami. Current name of Kanagawa prefecture.
[Ancient times]
An upper province belonging to the Tokaido (Engishiki). Currently written as "Sagami", the national seal in the Nara period was "Sagami" ("Sagami" is the same character as "mo"). In the Kojiki it is written as "Sagami" and pronounced as "Sagamu", while in the Wamyō Ruijūshō it is written as "Sagami" and pronounced as "Sagasan". Before the Taika Reforms, the province had Shinaga kuni no miyatsuko, Sagami kuni no miyatsuko, and Kamakurawake, and it is assumed that these three political spheres were based in the western region (Sakawa River basin), central region (Sagami River basin), and eastern region (Kamakura, Miura district area) of Sagami province, respectively.

　東海道に属する上国(《延喜式》)。現在は〈相模〉と書くが，奈良時代の国印は〈相摹〉(摹は摸と同字)となっている。《古事記》は〈相武〉と書いて〈佐賀牟〉とよみ，《和名類聚抄》は〈相摸〉と書いて〈佐加三〉とよんでいる。大化改新前には国内に師長（しなが）国造，相武国造，鎌倉別（わけ）が存在しており，これら三つの政治圏は，相模国内のそれぞれ西部地域(酒匂川流域)，中央地域(相模川流域)，東部地域(鎌倉，三浦郡辺)を基盤としていたと推測される。
