Former name of province. Sagami. Current name of Kanagawa prefecture. [Ancient times] An upper province belonging to the Tokaido (Engishiki). Currently written as "Sagami", the national seal in the Nara period was "Sagami" ("Sagami" is the same character as "mo"). In the Kojiki it is written as "Sagami" and pronounced as "Sagamu", while in the Wamyō Ruijūshō it is written as "Sagami" and pronounced as "Sagasan". Before the Taika Reforms, the province had Shinaga kuni no miyatsuko, Sagami kuni no miyatsuko, and Kamakurawake, and it is assumed that these three political spheres were based in the western region (Sakawa River basin), central region (Sagami River basin), and eastern region (Kamakura, Miura district area) of Sagami province, respectively.
