This is because normal human serum contains small amounts of autologous or allogeneic natural antibodies called cold agglutinins, which bind to blood cells at low temperatures and cause agglutination, but break off at high temperatures. The above phenomenon caused by these antibodies, or the method of detecting and measuring them, is called the cold agglutination reaction. Cold agglutinins are prominent in atypical pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection, infectious mononucleosis caused by EB virus infection, benign monoclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, and some patients with multiple myeloma.
