Takashi Iba

Music critic and stage director. Born in Tokyo. Dropped out of the Doshisha University Theology Department. Started out as a playwright, and founded the Modern Drama Association in 1912 (Taisho 1). In 1941, he formed the Kabuki Drama Association. The following February, he performed his own work, "Women's Army on the War Front," at the Asakusa Tokiwaza Theater, sparking the so-called Asakusa Opera, which remained popular until the Great Kanto Earthquake, and contributed to the development of the Japanese opera world. After the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923), he focused on criticism and writing, leaving behind many books and translations. The Iba Opera Award (10 times, 1948-57) was established to commemorate his achievements in opera.
