1510‐81 French orientalist and mystic. He studied hard and mastered Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic and other languages. In 1535 he traveled to Turkey and Syria to broaden his horizons before returning to France. With the protection of the king and his senior officials, he was appointed to the Royal College of Professors (the precursor to the Collège de France) in 1538, where he taught Greek, Hebrew and Arabic. In 1542 he incurred the king's displeasure and lost his job, and for the next 20 years he wandered around Europe and the Near East. Upon his return in 1562 he was immediately arrested on suspicion of heresy and was kept under house arrest in a monastery in Paris until his death.
