Sagamihara

Japanese: 相模原 - さがみはら

This alluvial plateau lies between the Sagami River and the Sakai River in central Kanagawa Prefecture. It is 140 to 30 meters above sea level. It is made up of gravel and Kanto loam layers, and the low groundwater table means poor water supply. Development has been delayed, with many areas being reclaimed after the Meiji period. Field farming is the main form of agriculture, and irrigation has progressed in recent years, but there has been a rapid increase in houses and factories, especially in Sagamihara City, Atsugi City, and Ebina City.

神奈川県中部，相模川と境川の間にある洪積台地。標高140〜30m。砂礫(されき)層と関東ローム層からなり，地下水面が低いので水利が悪く，開発は遅れ，明治以後の開拓地も多い。畑作が主で，近年灌漑(かんがい)が進んだが，最近は相模原市，厚木市，海老名市などを中心に住宅や工場が急増している。
