A general or common name for crustaceans in the order Cladocera of the subclass Branchiopoda, or one of these species. Daphnia pulex belongs to the family Water fleas, is planktonic, and is commonly found in shallow freshwater ponds and marshes. Its body length is about 1.2 to 2.5 mm, and when alive it is yellowish and translucent, sometimes reddish. Females are large, while males are small and rare. The head is separate from the body and has a pair of large compound eyes, one on the left and one on the right. The left and right compound eyes are completely fused together. 鰓脚(さいきやく)亜綱枝角目の甲殻類の総称または一般的呼び名,またはそのうちの1種を指す。ミジンコDaphnia pulexはミジンコ科に属し,浮遊性で,浅い淡水の池沼にごくふつうに見られる。体長1.2~2.5mmくらい,生きているときは黄色を帯びた半透明,ときに紅色を帯びていることもある。雌は大きく,雄は小型でまれにしかいない。頭部は胴部から分離しており,大きな左右1対の複眼がある。この左右の複眼は互いに完全に合一している。
