The Battle of Tenmokuzan

Japanese: 天目山の戦 - てんもくざんのたたかい

This battle took place on March 11, 1582 (Tensho 10), and resulted in the downfall of the Takeda clan, a feudal lord in Kai. Attacked by the combined forces of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu, Takeda Katsuyori found himself in a difficult position. At the invitation of Oyamada Nobushige, the lord of Gunnai, he set fire to the newly constructed Shinpu Castle (Nirasaki City) on March 3 and headed for Gunnai Iwadono Castle (present-day Otsuki City). However, on the 9th, Nobushige betrayed him and fired his guns, blocking his path. He was forced to decide to die on Mount Tenmoku (Yamato Village, Higashiyamanashi County), where his ancestor Takeda Nobumitsu had been killed in battle during the Uesugi Zenshu Rebellion, and traveled up the Hikawa River valley.

1582年(天正10)3月11日，甲斐の戦国大名武田氏が滅亡した合戦。織田信長･徳川家康の連合軍に攻められて窮地に陥った武田勝頼は，郡内領主小山田信茂の誘いに応じて，3月3日築城したばかりの新府城(韮崎市)に火を放って郡内岩殿城(現，大月市内)に向かったが，9日には裏切った信茂に鉄砲を撃ちかけられ行く手をはばまれたので，やむなく先祖の武田信満が上杉禅秀の乱で戦死した天目山(東山梨郡大和村)を死地に定め，日川の谷を上った。
