Saltpeter (English spelling)

One of the most common nitrate minerals. It occurs as a film or earth-like aggregate, growing on the surface of sedimentary rocks or soil in dry climate regions. It is not known to occur in Japan. It dissolves very easily in water, absorbing heat in the process, giving it a cool taste when licked. It is used as a fertilizer. Chilean saltpeter is its sodium-substituted form. This mineral has the same structure as aragonite, which has the same structure as calcite.

もっとも普通の硝酸塩鉱物の一つ。乾燥気候地域の堆積(たいせき)岩あるいは土壌の表面に着生して皮膜状あるいは土状集合として産する。日本では産出は知られていない。水にきわめて溶けやすく、その際熱を吸収するので、なめると冷味を感ずる。肥料として用いられる。チリ硝石はそのナトリウム置換体にあたる。本鉱はあられ石と同構造であり、チリ硝石は方解石と同構造である。
