Arima clan - Arimauji

(1) Lord of Kurume Domain, Chikugo It is said that the origin of the clan was Yoshisuke, the grandson of Akamatsu Norimura, who became the land steward of Arima-sho, Arima County, Settsu Province (Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture) and called himself the Arima clan. The seventh generation, Arima Shigenori, served Toyotomi Hideyoshi and moved to Miki Mitsuda Castle in Harima, but his son, Noriyori, joined the eastern army in the Battle of Sekigahara and received an increase in his fief. Next, the ninth Toyouji was given 30,000 koku in Yokosuka, Totomi (Shizuoka Prefecture), and in 1600 (Keicho 5) was given an additional 30,000 koku and moved to Fukuchiyama, Tamba (Kyoto Prefecture), where he was also granted 20,000 koku of his father Noriyoshi's estate. In 1620 (Genwa 6) he was transferred to Kurume, Chikugo (Fukuoka Prefecture), and was given 210,000 koku in eight counties: Mii, Mihara, Ikuha, Takeno, Yamamoto, Mizuma, Kozuma, and Shimotsuma.

From then until the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, they were successive lords of the Kurume domain, and within Edo Castle, their family status was that of a large hall. In the Meiji era, they became members of the nobility, and Yorimitsu became a count.

(2) Lord of Maruoka Domain, Echizen It is said that he originated in Arima-sho, Takaku County, Hizen (North Arima Town, Minamishimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture). During the Kamakura period, he had influence in the southern part of Takaku County, and when Toyotomi Hideyoshi divided Kyushu territories, he granted Arima Harunobu a territory of 40,000 koku in Takaku County and lived in Hinoe Castle. In 1612 (Keicho 17) after the Okamoto Daihachi Incident, Harunobu was exiled to Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), but his son Naozumi inherited his territory, and in 1619 he was given an additional 13,000 koku and transferred to Agata, Hyuga Province (Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture). He was given a fief of 53,000 koku in the four counties of Usuki, Miyazaki, Morogata, and Koyu, and was based in Nobeoka Castle. In 1691 (Genroku 4), he was held responsible for the flight of farmers, and was stripped of 3,000 koku of rice. He was transferred to Itoigawa in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture), and then to Maruoka in Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture), where he remained until the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures. After the Meiji period, he became a viscount.

(3) Lord of Fukiage Domain in Shimotsuke, a branch of the Arima clan, lord of Kurume Domain in Chikugo. Arima Toyouji's third son, Yoritsugu (Yoriyasu), served the Suruga Dainagon Tadanaga, and when Tadanaga was found guilty, he himself was placed under house arrest, but died without an heir. However, Yoshimasa, Toyouji's grandson by marriage, succeeded him, and during the reign of Ujinobu, he became a retainer of Tokugawa Yoshimune. In 1716 (Kyoho 1), he was granted a fief of 1,300 koku in Mie County, Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), and the following year, in 1717, he was granted a fief of 1,000 koku in Haga County, Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture). In 1726, he was granted an additional 7,700 koku in Take, Kawano, and Mie in Ise Province, Kawachi in Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture), and Ichihara County in Kazusa Province (Chiba Prefecture), giving him a total of 10,000 koku. In 1781 (Tenmei 1), during the reign of Ujiyoshi, he established a jin'ya in Goi, Kazusa Province, and during the reign of Ujishige, his territory was changed, and in 1842 (Tenpo 13), he established a jin'ya in Fukiage (Fukiage-cho, Tochigi City), Sakawa County, Shimotsuke Province, leading to the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures. During the Meiji period, he was granted the title of viscount.

(4) The lord of Komatsuzaki in Chikugo: A branch of the lord of Kurume. The 10th lord of Kurume, Tadayori, had no heir and adopted his maternal relative, Toyonori Koide, but gave birth to a son, Yorishi. Toyonori was awarded a fief of 10,000 koku in Komatsuzaki, Mihara County, but the family soon died out.
