A style of decorative arts and architecture that spread throughout Europe and America from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. In French, it means "new art." The name comes from L'art nouveau Bing, a store selling Oriental crafts and new designs that was opened in Paris in 1895 by the German art dealer Samuel Bing (1838-1905), and is used primarily in France and the UK. It was also called style moderne (modern style) in France and Belgium, Jugendstil (youth style) in Germany, and Secession (secession) in Austria, but the same form and spirit can be found in all of them.
