A Siberian republic belonging to the Russian Federation. Also known as Yakutia. It has an area of 3,103,200 km2 and a population of 949,300 (2010). Its capital is Yakutsk. The ethnic composition is 33.4% Yakut, 50.3% Russian, 7.1% Ukrainian, and other minorities such as Evenki, Even, and Yukaghir. It was incorporated into Russian territory in the 1630s and was used as a penal colony during the imperial era. It was known as a fur producing region, but gold mines were discovered in the mid-19th century, and it is now one of the world's leading diamond producing regions. It also has abundant natural gas and coal resources, and a large influx of Russians occurred in the 1950s and 1960s.
