The Spanish theologian Beatus of Liébana (died 798) wrote the Commentary on the Apocalypse of John (mid-10th century manuscript, Morgan Library, New York; 975 manuscript, Girona Cathedral). This work was repeatedly transcribed with illustrations, and had a great influence on the development of Romanesque art from Spain to France.
