4-dimethylamino-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenyl-5-pyrazolone. C 13 H 17 N 3 O(231.30). 3-Methyl-1-phenyl-5-pyrazolone is synthesized from acetoacetate and phenylhydrazine, and this is then N -methylated, nitrosated, reduced, and methylated. Colorless or white crystals or crystalline powder. Odorless. Slightly bitter taste. Melting point 107-109 °C. Easily soluble in chloroform and ethanol, soluble in water and ether. Changes with light. It has reducing properties, and in the presence of an oxidizing agent, it shows a blue to purple color reaction. It is used as a pyrazolone synthetic antipyretic and analgesic. Its efficacy is about three times that of antipyrine. It may cause side effects such as nausea, tachycardia, hematoporphyrinuria, and agranulocytosis.
