A city in central Nigeria. Located about 160 km south-southwest of Jos, on the Benue Plateau. It was originally an Arago town, but in 1804 the Kanuri people established a kingdom here. In 1873 it was conquered by the son of the Sultan of Sokoto, and during the reign of Mohamman Agwe from 1881 to 1903 it became the main commercial center of the Benue Valley. It is a distribution center for sesame, yams, cotton, Guinea corn, millet, etc., and has traditional industries such as cotton weaving and dyeing. Tin and columbite are produced in the vicinity. ナイジェリア中部の都市。ジョス南南西約 160km,ベヌエ高原に位置。古来アラゴ族の町であったが,1804年カヌリ族がここを中心に王国を建設。 73年ソコトのスルタンの子に征服され,81~1903年のモハマン・アグエの時代にベヌエ河谷の主要商業中心地となった。ゴマ,ヤムイモ,綿花,ギニアコーン,ミレットなどの集散地で,綿織物,染色などの伝統工業がある。付近でスズ,コロンブ石を産する。人口 10万 8100 (1991推計) 。
