A unit of length in the imperial system. Its symbol is "in". It is equal to 25.4 millimeters. Originally derived from the width of a thumb, the name comes from the Latin word uncia, meaning one-twelfth of a foot (the singular form of a foot). According to legend, the Saxons defined an inch as the length of three grains of barley. After it was determined that 12 inches equals 1 foot and 3 feet equals 1 yard, the difference between the British and American yards was adjusted to make 1 yard 0.9144 meters, and the inch was unified to its current value.
