Inch - Inch (English spelling)

Japanese: インチ - いんち(英語表記)inch
Inch - Inch (English spelling)

A unit of length in the imperial system. Its symbol is "in". It is equal to 25.4 millimeters. Originally derived from the width of a thumb, the name comes from the Latin word uncia, meaning one-twelfth of a foot (the singular form of a foot). According to legend, the Saxons defined an inch as the length of three grains of barley. After it was determined that 12 inches equals 1 foot and 3 feet equals 1 yard, the difference between the British and American yards was adjusted to make 1 yard 0.9144 meters, and the inch was unified to its current value.

Japanese:

ヤード・ポンド法の長さの単位。記号はinである。25.4ミリメートルにあたる。もともとは親指の幅から発したものであるが、名称はフート(フィートの単数形)の12分の1を意味するラテン語unciaに由来している。伝説によると、サクソン人はオオムギ3粒分の長さを1インチとしたという。12インチが1フート、3フィートが1ヤードという関係が決まったのち、イギリスとアメリカのヤードの差を調整して1ヤードを0.9144メートルとし、インチも現在の値に統一された。
