Xue Tao - Setto

Japanese:
Xue Tao - Setto

A female poet of the mid-Tang Dynasty in China. Her courtesy name was Hongdu. She was originally from Chang'an (Xian, Shaanxi Province), but moved to Chengdu in Sichuan with her father when she was young, and later became a singing prostitute. She was intelligent, witty, and skilled in poetry, and was favored by many notable people, including Yuan Zhen and Wu Yuanheng. Yuan Zhen gave her poems, and Wu Yuanheng appointed her as his editor, so she was called the "female editor." She excelled in quatrains, and wrote delicate and sentimental sentiments on crimson paper that she made herself. This is known as Xue Tao paper, and is loved by many people to this day. Currently, the ruins of Xue Tao Well, where she made paper, remain in Wangjiang Park in Chengdu. There is a volume of "Xue Tao Poems."
