Boundary theory - Sakai Soron

Japanese: 境相論 - さかいそうろん

Also written as Sakai Soron. A dispute over the boundaries of land and other properties that became prominent from the early Middle Ages and continued until the early modern period. During the early Middle Ages, especially in the 11th and 12th centuries, the development of mountains, fields, rivers, and sea areas, and the redevelopment of abandoned fields and rice paddies became active, and many medieval land territories such as manors, ho, beppu, and myo were established, giving rise to medieval "villages" within them. This expansion and development of land territories, combined with the increase in population, made the uses and benefits of mountains, fields, rivers, and sea areas complicated, and gave rise to a series of disputes over the ownership of fields and rice paddies.

堺相論とも書く。中世の成立期から顕著になり，近世初頭まで繰り返された所領などの境界をめぐる紛争。中世成立期，とくに11,12世紀になると，山野河海の開発，荒廃田畠の再開発などが活発化し，荘，保，別符，名などの多くの中世的所領が，内部に中世的な〈村〉を生み出しながら成立してきた。このような所領の増大･展開は，人口の増大と相まって山野河海の用益を入り組んだものとし，また田畠の所有をめぐる争いを次々に惹起した。
