...After the conquest, the Mamluk 'iqta was confiscated by the state, and after a land survey, it was re-allocated to the emin, the Ottoman financial official. This land was called muqāṭa', and the traditional Mamluks were in charge of the practical work of collecting taxes on the land within the muqāta. As Ottoman rule weakened from the 17th century onwards, these Mamluks gained power and eventually came to wield independent authority as tax collectors (murtazim). *Some of the glossaries that mention "muqāṭa'" are listed below.
