Straight arc pattern - Chokkomon

Japanese:
Straight arc pattern - Chokkomon

A distinctive pattern used in the first half of the Kofun period (4th to 6th centuries) in Japan. In recent years, it appears that its origins can be traced back to the trapezoidal earthenware patterns of the final Yayoi period. A typical straight-arc pattern is thought to be composed of two straight lines crossing each other diagonally, with a belt-like arc around the intersection point, and it follows a pattern. Types A, B, and kaginote patterns are known as straight-arc patterns from the early period of decorated tombs, but older straight-arc patterns are characterized by spiral expressions of multi-line belt patterns. The objects of application of the patterns include quivers, sword fittings made of wood or antler, and stone coffins and stone barriers of decorated tombs. The fact that it can be seen on quivers, shields, and lids of haniwa clay figures suggests that it may have been used quite widely on wooden and leather products, and is thought to have been a typical and distinctive pattern of the time.
