Kanuma [city] - Kanuma
A city in central Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. It is bordered by the Ashio Mountains to the west, the Kanuma Plateau to the east, and the Kanuma alluvial fan formed by a tributary of the Tone River. It borders Nikko to the north and Utsunomiya to the east. The city center is the Kurokawa valley settlement, which developed as a castle town and a post town on the Mibu Street. It is served by the Nikko Line, the Tobu Nikko Line, and the Tohoku Expressway. Lumber, famous for Kanuma fittings, and woodworking are thriving, and since 1960, woodworking complexes have been developed, and shipments of electrical equipment and plastics are increasing. In rural areas, strawberries and konjac are specialty products, and the city is famous nationwide for its azalea production. Kanuma soil and Kanuma stone for civil engineering and construction are also produced. In January 2006, Awano Town, Kamitsuga District, was incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 490.64 km 2 . 102,348 people (2010).

栃木県中部の市。1948年市制。西部は足尾山地,東部は鹿沼台地と,利根川の支流が形成した鹿沼扇状地。北は日光,東は宇都宮と接する。中心市街は黒川の渓口集落で,城下町,壬生通りの宿場町として発達。日光線,東武日光線,東北自動車道が通じる。鹿沼建具として有名な製材,木工業が盛んで,1960年から木工団地の造成が進み,電気機器やプラスチック工業の出荷が伸びている。農村部ではイチゴ,コンニャクを特産するほか,サツキの生産で全国的に有名。鹿沼土,土木建築用の鹿沼石も産する。2006年1月上都賀郡粟野町を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。490.64km2。10万2348人(2010)。
