...For example, J. W. Dobereiner of Germany recognized that there are many elements that show similar properties when grouped together in threes, such as [chlorine (Cl) – bromine (Br) – iodine (I)], [calcium (Ca) – strontium (Sr) – barium (Ba)], and [iron (Fe) – cobalt (Co) – nickel (Ni)], and attempted to classify these elements as "triad elements" in 1829. Later, Alexandre Émile Béguyer de Chancourtois (1819-86) of France discovered a new pattern, that is, that when atoms are arranged according to their atomic weight, elements with similar properties appear at roughly equal intervals, and based on this, he published an original diagram, "Vis de terre," in which elements are arranged in a spiral around a cylinder in 1862 (Figure 1). In 1865, the British J.A.R. Newlands published the "Law of Octaves" (also known as "Newlands' Law"), which states that if elements are arranged in order of atomic weight, a similar element appears every eighth element, and this closely resembles an octave in music. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "vis de terre" are listed below. …
