Scabiosa - Scabiosa

A biennial plant of the family Diapathaceae (APG classification: Caprifoliaceae). The stem is 30-80 cm tall. The leaves are opposite and pinnately lobed. From August to October, pale purple flower heads open upward at the end of a long stalk. The outer florets of the corolla are lip-shaped and have five lobes, while the central floret is tubular and has four equal lobes. It grows in the pampas grasslands of hills and mountains, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. It is named after the environment where it grows, resembling the chirping of pine crickets. A variant of the plant, Ezomatsumushisou, with sharply pointed leaf lobes, is distributed in northern Honshu and Hokkaido. The genus Diapathus has leathery bracts, 4-5 lobes of the corolla, and small bracts that encase the calyx and spread out in a cup- or funnel-like shape. There are about 70 species worldwide and two species in Japan, and the flowering plant is cultivated.

マツムシソウ科（APG分類：スイカズラ科）の越年草。茎は高さ30～80センチメートル。葉は対生し、羽状に裂ける。8～10月、長い花柄の先に淡紫色の頭花を上向きに開く。花冠は、周囲の小花は唇形状に5裂し、中心部の小花は筒状で等しく4裂する。丘陵から山地のススキ草原に生え、北海道から九州に分布する。名は、マツムシの鳴くような環境に生えるからという。本州北部、北海道には葉の裂片の先が鋭くとがる変種エゾマツムシソウが分布する。マツムシソウ属は、総包葉片は革質、花冠は4～5裂し、小総包葉は萼(がく)を包み、コップ状または漏斗(ろうと)状に広がる。世界に約70種、日本に2種分布し、ハナマツムシソウが栽培される。
