...A wooden door made of a single plank of wood secured with frames on the top, bottom, left and right sides is called a "sugito" and was invented to be used as a partition fitting in shoin-zukuri houses, such as the veranda, which faces the outside air. A sugito with a wide horizontal bar inserted between the top and bottom frames is called an "obito" or "obisanto" and became popular as a partition door in private homes from the mid-Edo period onwards. While shoin-zukuri houses normally use sliding doors as partitions, ordinary private homes often use itado, and obito was considered a high-quality fitting along with sugito. ...

…木の一枚板を上下左右の框（かまち）で固定した板戸を〈杉戸〉と呼び，書院造の住宅で，広縁（ひろえん）など直接外気に面する部分の間仕切建具に絵を描くために考え出されたものである。この杉戸の，上下框の中ほどに幅の広い横桟を入れたものを〈帯戸〉〈帯桟戸〉といい，江戸時代中期以降，民家の間仕切りの戸として盛んに用いられるようになる。書院造住宅では間仕切りに襖（ふすま）を用いるのが普通だが，一般の民家では板戸を用いる場合が多く，帯戸は杉戸と並んで上等の建具であった。…
