Date of birth and death unknown. A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Yamamoto clan. Commonly known as Wataya Kurozaemon. Real name Nishitake. Also known as Mugaiken, Fugaiken, and Fugaisai. He is estimated to have lived until the Tenna and Jokyo eras (1681-88) at the age of 70-plus. His death poem was "At dawn, the Pure Land sect blooms like flowers." He is one of the Seven Haiku Immortals of the Teimon. He entered the school of Teitoku at the age of 7, began haiku at the age of 11, and was permitted to become a tenja in 1653 (Shoo 2). Teitoku trusted him deeply, and at his teacher's command he worked on the compilation of "Taka Tsukuba" (1642) and "Kururu" (1650), among other works, and was also taught the secret teachings. His style, as described in Zuiryu's Teitoku Eidaiki (1692), is very old-fashioned and lacks any sense of intelligence.
