Nevsky - Nevskiy (English notation)

A Soviet orientalist. He graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1914 and went to Japan to study the following year, but stayed in Japan due to the Russian Revolution. He taught at Otaru Higher Commercial School and Osaka School of Foreign Studies, while studying Japanese folklore, the Ainu language, the Miyakojima dialect, the language of the Tsou people (Taiwan), and the Xixia (Tangut) language. During this time, he formed friendships with Kunio Yanagita, Shinobu Orikuchi, and Juntaro Ishihama (1888-1968). In the autumn of 1929 (Showa 4), he returned to the Soviet Union and became a professor at Leningrad University. He welcomed a Japanese woman, Iso Yorozuya (1901-1937), whom he had married while in Japan, and opened up new frontiers in Xixia language research and other fields. However, in the autumn of 1937, he was arrested during a "purge" and shot to death. He was rehabilitated in 1957. He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1962 for his posthumous collection of writings, "Xixia Linguistics" (1960).

ソ連の東洋学者。1914年ペテルブルグ大学を卒業、翌1915年日本へ留学したが、ロシア革命のために日本にとどまり、小樽(おたる)高等商業学校、大阪外国語学校で教鞭(きょうべん)をとりながら、日本民俗学、アイヌ語、宮古島方言、ツォウ族（台湾）の言語、西夏(せいか)（タングート）語などを研究した。この間、柳田国男(やなぎたくにお)、折口信夫(おりくちしのぶ)、石浜純太郎（1888―1968）らと親交を結んだ。1929年（昭和4）秋ソ連に帰り、レニングラード大学教授となり、在日中結婚した日本女性萬谷イソ(よろずやいそ)（1901―1937）を迎えて、西夏語研究その他に前人未踏の境地を開いた。しかし1937年秋「粛清」によって逮捕され、銃殺された。1957年に名誉回復。遺稿集『西夏言語学』（1960）によって1962年レーニン賞を贈られた。
