Japanese: ホルムスク（英語表記）Kholmsk

A port city in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. It is located on the western coast of the southern part of Sakhalin Island, overlooking the Tatar Strait. As the Tsushima Current, a tributary of the Kuroshio Current, flows north along the coast, it is the warmest area on Sakhalin and its port is ice-free. There are factories for pulp and paper, seafood processing, ship repair, etc. It is located about 50 km west of the oblast capital, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and is connected by rail and highway. Formerly a Japanese territory, its Japanese name is Maoka. Population about 35,000.
