Yamaguchi Seison

Haiku poet. Born in Morioka City. His real name was Yoshiro. After graduating from the former Second High School, he graduated from the Department of Mining, Faculty of Engineering, Tokyo Imperial University. After working for Furukawa Mining (now Furukawa Co., Ltd.) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo in 1921 (Taisho 10), and later a professor. Encouraged by Mizuhara Shuoushi and Tomiyasu Fusei, he joined the University of Tokyo haiku club, and with his pure and elegant style, he became a leading author of "Hototogisu" (Hototogisu). He also joined the writing study group "Yamakai" (Sankai), where he was praised for his masterful essays. In 1930 (Showa 5), ​​he became a judge for the first issue of "Natsukusa" in his hometown of Morioka, and as its president, he gained the respect of the oldest member of the haiku world. He is the author of numerous essays, including "Essays with Flowers" (1934), "Spring and Autumn in a Hermitage" (1943), and "Reminiscences of Pumpkins" (1965), as well as haiku collections such as "Weed Garden" (1934), "Snow Country" (1942), and "Simple Meals" (1973). He holds a doctorate in engineering and is a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo.

俳人。盛岡市に生まれる。本名吉郎。旧制二高を経て東京帝国大学工学部採鉱学科を卒業、古河鉱業(現古河機械金属)、農商務省に勤務ののち、1921年(大正10)東大工学部助教授、のち教授となった。水原秋桜子(しゅうおうし)、富安風生(とみやすふうせい)らに勧められて東大俳句会に加わり、清純、高雅な作風をもって『ホトトギス』の有力作者となり、文章の勉強会「山会」にも加わって随筆の妙手と評された。30年(昭和5)郷里盛岡に創刊の『夏草』選者となり、これを主宰、俳壇最長老として信望を集める。著書には随筆『花のある随筆』(1934)、『草庵(そうあん)春秋』(1943)、『回想の南瓜』(1965)、句集に『雑草園』(1934)、『雪国』(1942)、『粗餐(そさん)』(1973)など甚だ多い。工学博士、東大名誉教授。
