A former town in Oe County in northern Tokushima Prefecture. Located in the center of the Tokushima Plain, the main settlement is on the south bank of the Yoshino River, and the Tokushima Line runs through it. In the early Meiji period, it was a center for indigo cultivation, and after the Taisho period, sericulture developed and the silk-reeling industry flourished. Rice, vegetables and citrus cultivation, and livestock raising are carried out. In October 2004, it merged with Kawajima Town, Yamakawa Town, and Misato Village in Oe County to form Yoshinogawa City. 33.76 km2 . Population 25,345 (2003). 徳島県北部,麻植(おえ)郡の旧町。徳島平野中央部に位置し,主集落は吉野川南岸にあり徳島線が通じる。明治初期はアイ栽培の一中心で,大正以後養蚕が発達,製糸業が盛んであった。米作,野菜と柑橘(かんきつ)類の栽培,畜産を行う。2004年10月麻植郡川島町,山川町,美郷村と合併し,吉野川市となる。33.76km2。2万5345人(2003)。
