Located in southeastern Finland near the border with Russia, this is the largest lake in Finland. Because the shoreline is as complicated as a maze, the lake is sometimes referred to as just the southern part of 1,460 km2 (South Saimaa) and sometimes as the entire 4,400 km2 area (Greater Saimaa) at the same altitude. The lake surface is 76 m above sea level, with an average depth of 17 m and a maximum depth of 82 m. A canal was built connecting it to the Gulf of Finland in 1856, and repairs were completed in 1968, making it a 42.9 km long canal with eight sluice gates.
