A town on the southeast coast of Mutsu Bay in Kamikita District, Aomori Prefecture. During the Edo period, the main settlement was the port of Morioka Domain, and a base for maritime traffic with Osaka and Matsumae (Hokkaido). The Aoimori Railway runs through the town, and the Ominato Line branches off here. In summer, easterly winds called "yamase" blow, making conditions for rice cultivation poor. The fishing industry involves farming scallops, sea squirts, sea cucumbers, and herring. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 81.68 km2 . 14,314 people (2010). 青森県上北郡,陸奥(むつ)湾南東岸の町。主集落は江戸時代盛岡藩の港で,大坂や松前(北海道)との海上交通の基地であった。青い森鉄道が通じ,大湊(おおみなと)線が分岐。夏,〈やませ〉(偏東風)が吹き,稲作条件は悪い。漁業は,ホタテ,ホヤ,ナマコ,ニシンなどの養殖を行う。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。81.68km2。1万4314人(2010)。
