Sudare is made by arranging bamboo or reeds with gaps between them and weaving them. It is used as a partition or sunshade inside a room. "Sudare" is a type of blind, and "su" (su) is a word derived from "sukima" (gap) and originally meant a mat. Relics thought to be blinds date back to the Jomon period. There are many poems about sudare in the Manyoshu, including "Wagayadono no sanju wo kashi aki no kaze fuku," and sudare have been used in Japan since ancient times. Other materials used for blinds include shino (reed), kaya (reed), suge (reed), and komo (rice straw). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
