...Since the 18th century, the classical and Romanesque mansions built by wealthy aristocrats and merchants have been converted into public facilities such as libraries and museums, while modern high-rise buildings such as hotels and apartments line both sides of the main roads, such as Tver Prospekt (formerly Gorky Prospekt) running northwest from the Kremlin and Novy Arbat (formerly Kalinin Prospekt) running west. Although the reorganization of city blocks has progressed considerably, side streets and back streets such as Kuznetsky Most and Arbat Street near the Kremlin still have a 19th-century atmosphere with their narrow, winding streets and low-rise houses.
