An Islamic state that existed on the northwestern tip of Sumatra from the early 16th century to the early 20th century. After the Portuguese occupation of Malacca, it became the leader of the neighboring hostile countries, and reached its peak during the reign of King Iskandar Muda in the first half of the 17th century. It subsequently declined and was divided into several states in the 19th century, but came under Dutch rule as a result of the Aceh War at the end of the same century. Even after independence from the Republic of Indonesia, it has occasionally shown resistance to the central government.
