A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Shiimoto. His real surname was Tani. He was from Uda, Yamato Province (Nara Prefecture). He was adopted by Sasaki Mondo, a chief retainer of the Uda Domain, but made a mistake and became a ronin. He first went by the name Noritake and was a member of the Saibu school. Later he joined the Saikaku school. He also took the names Nishimaru and Saimaru. Around 1677 (Enpo 5), he traveled east and came into contact with Chowa and Gonsui, and in 1679, around the time he published his haiku anthology Bando Taro, he formed a friendship with Basho's school. In the winter of 1689 (Genroku 2), he moved to Osaka. After traveling to Sanyo and Shikoku from 1692 to 1693, he became a central figure in the Osaka haiku world. He visited Edo several times after the end of the Genroku period (1688-1704), and made great contributions to connecting the haiku circles of Edo and Osaka.
