In India, a fence or palisade was built to separate a stupa or the sacred area around it from the secular world. It is thought that it was originally a wooden fence, but was later made of stone. A balustrade is usually surrounded by circular or square balustrade posts with square or octagonal chamfers, a capstone is placed at the top, and each balustrade post is connected in three tiers by a capstone below. Usually, a pylon is provided on all four sides, but in some cases, as in the Great Stupa of Sanchi, reliefs are applied only to the pylons, and in other cases, as in the balustrade at Bharhut, many reliefs are applied to the sides of the balustrade posts and capstones as well as the pylons.
