…At the same time, after 1959, he published abroad under the pen name Abram Tertz, including the critique What is Socialist Realism? (1956), the novella The Inquisition (1956), Lyubimov (1962-63), and the collection of aphorisms Unexpected Ideas (1966). These works were discovered by the authorities, and in August 1965 he was arrested along with his friend, the writer Yuri Daniel (pen name Nikolai Arjak), and in February 1966 he was sentenced to seven years of hard labor (Daniel was sentenced to five years). The records of this trial were illegally taken out of the country (including Ginzburg's The Trial Papers), and aroused worldwide public opinion as a crackdown on free creativity. …
