Ben Bella

Leader of the Algerian nationalist movement and first president after independence. In office from 1963 to 1965. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the French army during World War II, but from 1946 he participated in the movement for independence from France, and led the formation of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the armed uprising (Algerian War) in 1954. After independence in 1962, he became the country's first prime minister in September of that year and its first president the following September, and actively promoted non-aligned diplomacy and socialist economic construction. He was ousted in a coup led by Boumedienne and others in June 1965, and served in prison until October 1980.

アルジェリアの民族運動の指導者，また独立後の初代大統領。在任1963‐65年。第2次大戦中フランス軍下士官をつとめたが，1946年以降フランスからの独立運動に参加し，54年に民族解放戦線(FLN)の結成と武装蜂起(アルジェリア戦争)を指導した。62年独立後，同年9月に初代首相，翌年9月に初代大統領に就任して，積極的に非同盟外交と社会主義的経済建設を推進した。65年6月，ブーメディエンらのクーデタによって失脚し，80年10月まで獄中生活を送った。
