1912‐ Leader of the Algerian nationalist movement and first president after independence. In office from 1963 to 1965. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the French army during World War II, but from 1946 he participated in the movement for independence from France, and led the formation of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the armed uprising (Algerian War) in 1954. After independence in 1962, he became the country's first prime minister in September of that year and its first president the following September, and actively promoted non-aligned diplomacy and socialist economic construction.
