A member of the Agamidae family of the order Lacertilia. It is about 50cm long, more than half of which is made up of the tail. There is considerable variation in body color, with the ground color of the back varying from gray to reddish brown, brown, or black-brown, and most have vertical light stripes on both sides of the center. The scales on the top of the head and behind the corners of the mouth, on the throat and sides of the body, become spiny, giving the appearance of having a beard, hence the name. It is semi-arboreal, and in addition to small animals, it also feeds on plant flowers and young shoots. It is found in the eastern half of Australia, excluding the northern part.

トカゲ目キノボリトカゲ科。全長 50cmぐらいで，その半分以上を尾が占める。体色には変異が多く，背面の地色は灰色から赤褐色，褐色，黒褐色などさまざまで，多くは中央両側に縦に並んだ淡色紋をもつ。頭頂部から口角のうしろへかけてと，咽喉部，体側部などの鱗が棘状になり，顎ひげをもつように見えるのでこの名がある。半樹上性で，小動物のほかに植物の花や若芽も食べる。北部を除くオーストラリアの東半分に分布する。
