Maple leaf grass - Maple leaf grass

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The stems are upright and can reach a height of 1 meter. The leaves are long-stalked and alternate, with palmately-shaped blades that have 5 to 7 lobes. From July to August, a large panicle is produced at the top of the stem, with numerous flower heads. Each flower head consists of 5 white tubular flowers. The involucre is pale greenish-white and tubular, with 5 involucre segments. A native of Japan, it grows under the trees in mountainous areas, distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. In the Tohoku region, it is a type of wild vegetable, and young seedlings are harvested in spring for food; it is called shidoki or shidoke.
