Riverbank

Japanese: 河原 - かわはら
Riverbank

The former name of a town (Kawara-cho) in Yazu-gun, eastern Tottori Prefecture. Currently, the area occupies the southern part of Tottori City. It was incorporated as a town in 1926 (Taisho 15). In 1955 (Showa 30), it merged with the four villages of Kunifusa, Yakami, Saigo, and Sanuki. In 2004 (Heisei 16), it was incorporated into Tottori City along with Kokufu Town, Mochigase Town, Kedaka Town, Shikano Town, Aoya Town, Fukube Village, and Saji Village. The JR Inbi Line and National Route 53 run through the area. The old town area is located near the confluence of the Sendai River and its tributaries, the Hatto River, the Kisaichi River, and the Hiketa River. The main industry is agriculture, with rice, Fuyu persimmons, Nijisseiki pears, shiitake mushrooms, and other crops being cultivated. Ayu fishing is also popular along the Chiyo River, and ayu dishes are a local specialty of the town. The riverside in the center developed from a teahouse settlement along the Kamigata road, and was known for sake brewing. Menuma Shrine in the Yakami district enshrines Yakamihime, who appears in the "White Rabbit of Inaba" myth in the Kojiki. The Ushido district is the birthplace of Ushinoto ware, a folk art form. Upstream of the Hikida River is Mitakikei, a prefectural designated scenic spot.
