Around 1791-1856 Said was the ruler (imam) of Muscat and Oman at the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. He placed importance on the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa, with which he had long had trade ties, and attempted to control coastal trade from his base on the island of Zanzibar. In 1840, he moved his base from Muscat to Zanzibar, and European countries recognized Said's control over the East African coast and opened consulates in Zanzibar. Since Said's finances were dependent on customs duties, he encouraged Arab merchants to send large caravans into the interior of Africa to sell imported goods and obtain ivory and slaves.
