It is the second largest city in the Russian Federation after Moscow. It is located in the delta region of the mouth of the Neva River at the back of the Gulf of Finland, east of the Baltic Sea, about 650 km northwest of Moscow. Of the city's total area of 606.8 km2 (1,400 km2 including the suburbs), about one-tenth, or 58 km2 , is water, making it a literal "water city." The city's population is 4,456,000 (1994). It is the northernmost of the world's major cities with a population of over one million. It is located at latitude 59°58′ north, the same as southern Alaska, and has long days in the summer.
