An old town in Kimotsuki County, eastern Osumi Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous and national forest, and the main fishing port faces Uchinoura Bay. The town cultivates ponkan oranges and snow peas, and fishes for yellowtail. The University of Tokyo's Space Observatory was established in 1962, and launched Japan's first artificial satellite, Osumi, in February 1970. Hizaki is a habitat for cycads (a special natural monument). In July 2005, it merged with Takayama Town, Kimotsuki County, to become a town. Area: 179.36 km2 . Population: 4,863 (2003). 鹿児島県大隅半島東部,肝属(きもつき)郡の旧町。大部分が国有林の山地で,内之浦湾に面し主集落の漁港がある。ポンカン,サヤエンドウの栽培,ブリ漁などを営む。1962年設置の東大の宇宙空間観測所は1970年2月日本最初の人工衛星〈おおすみ〉を打ち上げた。火崎はソテツ自生地(特別天然記念物)。2005年7月肝属郡高山町と合併し町制,肝付町となる。179.36km2。4863人(2003)。
