French novelist. One of the founding members of the Académie Française, he is known for the beauty of his refined writing style. After Les Merits and Demerits Histories (1620), he wrote Qualité (1621), one of the masterpieces of the key novel, and then Polexandre in 1629. He continued to add to and revise this masterpiece, which went through six editions by 1645. The sequel, La Young Alcidiane (1651), was left unfinished. As a writer of long love stories with turbulent plots, he was enthusiastically read in 17th-century French high society, especially among women, alongside such authors as D'Urfé, Mademoiselle Scudéry, and La Carrenaïde.

フランスの小説家。アカデミー･フランセーズの創立会員の一人で，洗練された文体の美しさで知られる。《歴史功罪論》(1620)のあと，鍵小説の代表作の一つである《カリテ》(1621)，次いで1629年に《ポレクサンドル》を著し，45年まで6版を重ねてこの大作の補筆修正をつづけた。続編にあたる《若きアルシディアーヌ》(1651)は未完に終わる。波乱万丈の筋が構成する長編恋愛小説の作家として，デュルフェ，スキュデリー嬢，ラ･キャルプルネードらとならび，17世紀フランスの社交界とくに婦人の間で，熱狂的に愛読された。
