1600‐74 French novelist. One of the founding members of the Académie Française, he is known for the beauty of his refined writing style. After Les Merits and Demerits Histories (1620), he wrote Qualité (1621), one of the masterpieces of the key novel, and then Polexandre in 1629. He continued to add to and revise this masterpiece, which went through six editions by 1645. The sequel, La Young Alcidiane (1651), was left unfinished. As a writer of long love stories with turbulent plots, he was enthusiastically read in 17th-century French high society, especially among women, alongside such authors as D'Urfé, Mademoiselle Scudéry, and La Carrenaïde.
