Mas'ūdī (English spelling)

Arab historian and geographer. Born into a distinguished family in Baghdad. Traveled to Iran, India, Sri Lanka, and Zanzibar at a young age, broadening his knowledge. His main work, Akhbār al-Zamān (Information of the Times), is an encyclopedic world history from the creation of the world to his time, consisting of 30 volumes, but most of it has been lost. A summary of this work is Murūj al-zahab wa ma'ādin al-jawhar (The Golden Pastures and the Mines of Precious Stones), which is an important source on the history of the Abbasid dynasty, the history of the Turkic peoples of Central Asia, and the geography of the non-Islamic world. Kitāb al-tanbīh wa al-ishrāf (Book of Corrections and Supervision) has also been largely lost, but a section on the biographies of notable people from the early Islamic period has been published.

アラブの歴史家、地理学者。バグダードの名家に生まれる。若くしてイラン、インド、スリランカ、ザンジバルを周遊し、知見を広めた。主著『時代の情報』Akhbār al-Zamānは、天地創造より、彼の時代に至る百科全書的な大世界史で、30巻よりなっていたというが、一部を除いて散逸した。これを要約したのが『黄金の牧場と宝石の鉱山』Murūj al-zahab wa ma‘ādin al-jawharで、アッバース朝史や、中央アジアのトルコ系諸民族史、非イスラム世界の地誌に関する重要な史料となっている。『訂正と監督の書』Kitāb al-tanbīh wa al-ishrāfも大部分が散逸したが、初期イスラム時代の名士列伝の部分が刊行されている。
